The HEC-HMS model was prepared by Gonzalo Espinoza using rainfall data from the Halloween storm. Zoom in to the area around the gage and you’ll see the similarity of the HEC-HMS layout and that of NHDPlus, from which this model was developed. Here is the layout of Onion Creek in HEC-HMS. The red square is the gage at Onion Creek at Highway 183.
In this tutorial, the latest version of HEC-HMS has been installed and demonstrated that after the installation how to open project that are already developed.

This includes large river basin water supply and flood hydrology to small urban or natural watershed runoff. models like the HEC-HMS and take advantage of the high speed computer programs than spreadsheet exercises (Kalita, 2008). The HEC-HMS contains four main components.1) An analytical model to calculate overland flow runoff as well as channel routing, 2) an advanced graphical user interface illustrating hydrologic HEC-HMS has been developed for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

In includes many traditional hydrologic analysis procedures such as event infiltration, unit hydrographs, and hydrologic routing. The objective of this session is to create a HEC-HMS model using GIS data for hydrologic modeling of a single event for Cedar Creek Watershed (CCW) in Indiana. Although the data and instructions provided here are for CCW, but the process can easily be replicated for any watershed by using a digital elevation model. What you just did is opened a Basin Model for Cedar Creek in HEC-HMS. The Basin Model contains information relevant to the physical attributes of the model, such as basin areas, river reach connectivity, or reservoir data. In addition to basin model, you will need a meteorologic model to describe the meteorology (e.g., rainfall) of the watershed. In addition to stream/runoff thermal models, several public domain hydrologic models are capable of simulating stream/runoff in urban watersheds, including Hydrologic Modeling Systems, or HMS

HEC-HMS contains a series of Components, and in this project, lets start with the Basin Model Manager We need to create a New basin model, for which the default name is Basin 1 . You should enter a short description of this basin, and select Create .

Figure 2. Background maps can be added to provide a spatial context for the basin model elements. Maps can be moved up or down in the drawing order. Color Ramps. Color ramps define the sequence of colors used in mapping values in a raster. HEC-HMS provides a large number of default color ramps.
